News Channel Biogeochemistry and Pollutant Dynamics (IBP)

After a successful fall series, the IBP seminar will continue in the spring semester every second Friday, 12:30-13:30 in CHN P12 or via Zoom. The first talk will be on March 3rd by Luca Carraro (Eawag). We're looking forward to inspiring presentations and discussions!  

The new IBP Seminar Series provides interesting insights into current research highlights of our institute and is a great opportunity for networking. The seminar takes place every other week on Fridays, 12:30-13:30 in CHN P12.

Martin Ackermann will become the new Director of Eawag from 1 January 2023, succeeding Janet Hering. The Federal Council elected him on 29 June 2022 at the request of the ETH Board.

The first in-person IBP PhD Congress since 2019 was a success and provided great opportunities to re-connect on a social and scientific level after the pandemic.

Lenny Winkel, Professor of Inorganic Environmental Geochemistry at ETH Zurich and Eawag, has been honoured with the Science Innovation Award by the European Association of Geochemistry (EAG).

After the 13th IBP PhD Congress had to be cancelled in 2020, we organised the first-ever IPB PhD Online Congress on the 9th of April 2021 in Gather.Town with more than 130 participants.

Prof. Dr. Kristin Schirmer, Head of Department at Eawag and Adjunct Professor at EPFL, has been appointed Adjunct Professor at ETH Zürich. Congratulations!

The ETH-Board appoints Dr. Carsten Schubert as a new member of the Directorate of Eawag, the aquatic research institute within the ETH Domain. Carsten Schubert is associated with the IBP as Lecturer since 2004 and as Adjunct Professor since 2019.

Dr. Núria Casacuberta-​Arola is an Environmental Scientist and a specialist in studying ocean circulation by looking at trace elements. In her ERC project, she will use a novel approach that combines artificial and natural radioactive tracers to study the fluxes, circulation timescales and mixing processes of waters in the Arctic and subpolar North Atlantic oceans.  

Ari Feinberg was awarded the ACP Award for Atmospheric Research 2020 for his exceptional achievements during his PhD thesis on modelling of atmospheric S and Se cycles. Ari is currently a postdoc at IBP.  

A warm welcome to Dr. Denise Mitrano as Assistant Professor in Environmental Chemistry of Anthropogenic Materialsis. She is an experienced environmental analytical chemist with training in geochemistry. Her research focuses on the distribution and impacts of anthropogenic materials in technical and environmental systems.  

A warm welcome to Dr. Kristy Deiner as Assistant Professor of Environmental DNA. The central objective of Kristy Deiner’s research is to understand the impact of species extinction on the functioning of ecosystems. She focuses mainly on freshwater habitats.
