Open Postdoc position:

Postdoctoral Position in Environmental Biogeochemistry

Looking for a new position? We always welcome applications...see details...

PhD student positions:

current status: We are currently interviewing candidates.

Posted 15.10.2014:  The Soil Chemistry Group of Prof. Ruben Kretzschmar at ETH Zurich is inviting applications for

2 PhD positions in Soil Environmental Chemistry

The research is focused on biogeochemical redox processes controlling the behavior of inorganic contaminants such as Cu, Hg, and Cd in periodically flooded soils and sediments. In particular, we will study the formation and mobility of sulfide nanoparticles and sorption processes on clay mineral surfaces in anoxic environments. The research will include experimental work, geochemical modeling, and the use of advanced analytical and spectroscopic techniques. The project is funded by the Swiss National Science Foundation.

The ideal candidates are highly motivated for scientific research in environmental and soil geochemistry and the fate of inorganic contaminants. Applicants must hold an MSc degree (or equivalent) in environmental sciences, geoecology, geology, mineralogy, crystallography, chemistry, or a related natural science discipline. Good knowledge of spoken and written English and excellent communication and team skills are expected. Employment will be according to standard regulations of ETH Zurich. The project will start upon mutual agreement, preferably in Spring/Summer 2015 or earlier (funding secured for 3-4 years).

For further information please contact Prof. Ruben Kretzschmar by e-mail (kretzschmar@env.ethz.ch; no applications) and visit our website: www.soilchem.ethz.ch

Applications, including a cover letter describing the motivation and interests of the candidate, a CV, copy of bachelor and master transcripts, addresses of 2-3 potential referees, and a summary of the applicant's master thesis (if already completed), must be submitted online on www.jobs.ethz.ch and addressed to: ETH Zurich, Mr. Rolf Oertli, Human Resources, CH-8092 Zürich. The search will continue until both positions are filled.

Postdoc / Research Associate positions (ETH funding):

Postdoctoral Position in Environmental Biogeochemistry (we are currently interviewing candidates, no further applications are accepted if the position can be filled)

Postdoc fellowships (with external funding):

Our group can host a limited number of postdoctoral fellows who have external fellowships. Since we usually receive a large number of requests by potential applicants, we strongly recommend that you contact Ruben Kretzschmar stating your research interests at least 3 months before the relevant submission deadline (6 months for SNSF Ambizione and Professorships). This is important to leave enough time for the preparation of a strong proposal. Also, if you contact us too late, we may already be commited to other proposals (we can only support one candidate per call for each fellowship, at the maximum).

Examples:

Swiss Government Excellence Scholarships (annual submission deadlines: September to November)

Bilateral programmes with many countries, check the website for country-specific information and deadlines.

ETH Fellowship (annual submission deadlines: 1.3. and 1.9.)

Highly competitive fellowship, duration 2 years.

Marie Curie Fellowships (check the open calls)

SNSF Ambizione (next submission deadline: 13.2.2015)

Up to five years after doctorate, highly competitive, duration maximum three years.

SNSF Professorships (2014 submission deadline: 1.5.)

Two to nine years after doctorate, highly competitive, duration 4 plus 2 years.

There are many other fellowship programs not listed here, possibly including programs in your home country.
